WELCOME all about Scott Carpenter

Bath born playwright and dramatist Scott Carpenter this year celebrates his 23nd birthday. Having graduated from Bath Spa University with a 1st degree in drama, Carpenter continues his rise following the likes of Bertholt Brecht, Edward Bond and Sarah Kane both in style and importance, whilst maintaining a distinct, unique voice. Asking the audience to confront head-on the question 'what does it mean to be human', his work asks the larger questions at a time when British theatre shies away from them. Carpenter's plays are hard-hitting, confrontational and unnerving in their accurate depiction of the world he sees crumbling around us.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Edward Bond for the continued support and guidance he has offered in 2007. It was Bond's play Saved that inspired my play Diminished, a new direction for my writing and I haven't looked back since. I am delighted that Bond's comedy The Sea is to be performed in the West End this year, hopefully this signals the first of many productions of his work in 2008.

To my surprise I realised that it had been two years since my last play was completed. I have recently finished writing two. Its funny how things work out. The first is a piece called 'Revelation', which feels like the end of a trilogy, comprising of A Muse to Death and Human - A Parable. The second is collaboration with Adrian Millard, an as yet unnamed musical. My first attempt at such, as I have a hatred for most. However I see it as a challenging piece with songs that add to the questions being asked. A cross between Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle and Dr Zhivago. I am in discussions to stage both plays at various places and will hopefully bring news soon.

A Muse to Death received it's European debut recently in Milan and Como, and it was nice to be invited to attend. The cast were incredibly complimentary about me and Muse.

Finally, there has been some excellent comedy on television recently. The American 'democratic' process is under way once more with clowns aplenty on both sides. The sad reality is that it doesn't matter who becomes president of the United States. (Yet I'm still hoping its not a republican…!)

Carpenter's topical play 'A Muse to Death' will have its London debut at the Courtyard Theatre, London on the 13th May.
A confronational piece, author and lecturer Dr Peter Billingham described the play with Edward Bond's 'Lear' at the Sheffield Crucible as "the most powerful piece of drama of 2005".
